renda-rae / andreia

In seeking the sin eater incarnation of Ardbert's fallen party member Renda-Rae, you are joined by a Mystel (Miqo'te) by the name of Lue-Reeq. Boasting of wealth, he bids you join him on a grand hunt of Andreia, the Cardinal Virtue that was once Renda-Rae. Andreia now roams the land in search of terrible beasts to slay, which then rise as sin eaters in her wake, so there's good cause to take her down.

While in pursuit of Andreia, you have a vision of Renda-Rae's own past, in which she lost two of her hunting companions to the terrible beast Balam-Quitz. Renda-Rae swore revenge, and more importantly decided she would not lose anyone else to the beast. Thus, while she joined Ardbert's party and traveled the realm with them, when word came of her quarry, she went to face it alone.

That is, she tried. Naturally, Ardbert and the others realized she was missing and came to her aid. Despite Renda-Rae's great skill with a bow, only together could such a terrible beast be slain. Afterwards, Ardbert takes her to task for trying to go it alone: are they not comrades, he says?

Ardbert: These bonds of fellowship between us must come before all else. Otherwise, they may as well not exist. You say the thought of losing us pained you? What of our feelings? What of our loss? What if we had not arrived when we did!? You've saved our lives more times than I can count─how dare you refuse to let us do the same!

In this, as in many of these Echo flashbacks, it's obvious that Ardbert is exactly what he appeared to be during the main story: a hero who cares deeply for his friends, who will fight to the bitter end to save the world he loves. Yet there's little nuggets of characterization that get thrown in, too — like reminding Renda-Rae that he needs her ears to hear what nonsense the other party members are saying about him behind his back. There's clear camaraderie between all of them, the kind that can't be faked.

As for Andreia, you and Lue-Reeq aren't the only ones out to slay her. Unfortunately for those other hunters, none proved able, and in their place have risen sin eaters bound to the Cardinal Virtue. Specifically, the people she's brought back as sin eaters match Ardbert's adventuring party in composition — a Hume with an axe, a dwarven healer, and so forth. In fighting Andreia, you have to take them all down.

Your companion in all this, Lue-Reeq, is not exactly a bastion of martial prowess himself, so most of the work is left to you, by way of a solo duty. At the end when you stand victorious, with Andreia succumbing to your might, you see a shade of Renda-Rae, who reflects that no matter how difficult it was to let others into her heart, it was all worth it.

Overall, this isn't my favorite of the role quests, but it's not bad. Renda-Rae's backstory is thoroughly fleshed out to make her an interesting character to be tracking, and the bits we get of the rest of the party are welcome. And with her sin eater dead, Renda-Rae can finally rest.
