lamitt / sophrosyne

Lamitt was the dwarven healer of Ardbert's party — dwarf in this case meaning the Lalafell of the First. The dwarves have strict traditions regarding wearing helms, and Lamitt is known as one who scorned hers and turned her back on the dwarves. This, coupled with the fact that Lamitt is now a Cardinal Virtue called Sophrosyne, has lead the dwarves to send one of their own to take down the sin eater and restore their good name.

You're joined in this quest by Giott, who spends as much time drinking as insulting you. In joining with Giott, you soon learn of Lamitt's past, such as when she saved Ardbert's life. Ardbert had been adventuring alone up to that point, and had gotten in over his head, but with Lamitt's healing managed to pull through. She joins his party, and the two of them set off through Norvrandt together, to be joined later by the others.

In investigating Lamitt, you find that she sought a strange power from the fallen Ronkan civilization, and managed to obtain it at great peril. That done, Lamitt returned to her home, Tomra, and cured her sister and her people of a terrible disease, stoneblight. Yet to have left Tomra and joined with outsiders is enough for the elders of the village to banish her for good. Lamitt accepts her exile, despite Ardbert's protests: they have a greater foe still to defeat.

Your dwarven companion is conflicted about this; it comes to light later that Giott's ancestor was the one who banished Lamitt. Still, the two of you figure out that Sophrosyne is still trying to heal the people it once saved as Lamitt, and you come up with a plan to take the Virtue down. It's a dicey fight, but in the end, Lamitt is properly put to rest.

On the whole, this is a nice, tidy storyline, and it's one I've always liked a lot. We don't get a ton of detail about Lamitt's time as an adventurer, but it's made very evident that she cared deeply for Ardbert and was willing to follow him to the ends of the world. And while he's not the best at showing it, it's obvious Ardbert treasured Lamitt as well.

Lamitt: Ardbert, you stubborn idiot. You sweet boy. You never did understand what you meant to me...

It's definitely possible to read their relationship as romantic — or at least one-sided pining, in Lamitt's case — but I don't think she ever made her feelings clear to him. And while there's some tragedy in that, I think it's nice that Lamitt gets closure through you and Giott taking down Sophrosyne.
